The Paris Motor Show, a prestigious name. It is not only the first auto show in history, but also a significant indicator for the global automotive industry.
Since its debut in 1898, this stage has witnessed countless milestones in automotive history. Every opening is a bold prediction and showcase of future travel modes.
Today, the 90th edition of the Paris Motor Show officially kicks off. It is worth noting that in the Versailles Exhibition Center, we see some familiar faces, with new energy vehicles unveiled by Chinese brands such as BYD, Leap Motor, and WM Motor, bringing a little Chinese excitement to the world.
Among the most anticipated new cars is naturally the Xiaopeng P7+. At the Paris Motor Show, Xiaopeng Motors officially announced the pre-sale price of the P7+ - 209,800 RMB.
In fact, this is not the first appearance of the Xiaopeng P7+. Just 4 days ago, on October 10, Xiaopeng Motors held a debut event for the P7+ in Shenzhen, which attracted widespread attention and discussion at the time.
As the opening act of Xiaopeng Motors in the new decade, the introduction of the P7+ holds significant importance for the brand. Will it open a successful new chapter for Xiaopeng Motors, or will it be a mediocre model, possibly even putting the brand at a disadvantage?
Xiaopeng P7+, what kind of car is it really?
Similar to the initial reception of the Xiaopeng X9, the biggest controversy surrounding the P7+ is its exterior design. Looking back at past reports from Dong Chehui, the comments section overwhelmingly felt that its rear design challenges traditional aesthetics.
From the front, the Xiaopeng P7+ is actually well-designed, incorporating the more sculpted surfaces of the X9, while also inheriting the original headlight layout of the P7, creating a more modern and recognizable "Robot Face" front end.
The issue lies in the newly added floating roof and dual-layer rear wing design. Some views suggest that this is Xiaopeng's effort to change for the sake of change, calling it "unnecessary complex design."
However, when we consider the product positioning of the P7+, we can see that Xiaopeng's design attempts are not without reason. These new designs are not arbitrary but carefully considered based on practical functional requirements.
In defining the P7+, He Xiaopeng explained:
Starting from the P7+ launch event, everyone will see that our P7 family will have two styles: the P7i series focusing on personality and sportiness, and the P7+ focusing on home use, spaciousness, and comfort.
In other words, the P7+ and P7i are not iterative, but rather a branch derived from the P7 family, running parallel to the P7i.
In He Xiaopeng's view, the emergence of the P7+ fills many Xiaopeng fans with joy. To explain the reason, let's rewind to 2020.
In January 2020, the domestic Tesla Model 3 officially rolled off the assembly line at the Shanghai Gigafactory, with its price dropping significantly from over 400,000 RMB during the import period to 299,000 RMB after national subsidies. This notable price adjustment made the Model 3, a direct competitor of the "34C" pure electric sedan, even more competitive in terms of "high cost-performance."
Since there was a lack of products directly competing with the Model 3 on the market at that time, it almost became the undisputed choice in the pure electric sedan field - until the Xiaopeng P7 was launched.
Other than Tesla, the only option is the Xiaopeng P7.
In April 2020, the Xiaopeng P7 was officially unveiled, quickly becoming a breakthrough product in the domestic new energy vehicle market. For a long time, the Xiaopeng P7 and the Tesla Model 3 jointly led the twenty-thousand RMB level pure electric sedan market, and in 2022, achieved the impressive milestone of 100,000 units produced, setting a new record for new carmakers.
The success of the Xiaopeng P7 can be summarized simply in two points: avant-garde dynamic exterior design and industry-leading intelligence.
In He Xiaopeng's view, P7 owners are all fans of appearance and technology. Objectively speaking, this is true. However, in pursuit of a dynamic appearance, the P7 did compromise on rear passenger space, with many users describing the rear seats as "upright small benches." Additionally, the P7's trunk space is relatively small, limiting its practicality to a certain extent.
Undeniably, the attraction of the exterior is an important factor for consumers, but if it is the main family vehicle, practicality is often the key consideration.
While I love the Xiaopeng P7, is there a possibility for more space?
It is based on this market feedback that the Xiaopeng P7+ was born.
Why the dual-layer rear wing?
At the unveiling event, He Xiaopeng pointed out the "two main missions" of the P7+, one of which is to allow more people to enjoy the "luxurious executive sedan" space and comfort.
The premise here is to retain as much of the P7's original dynamism as possible. He Xiaopeng has thought this through well, aiming to make the P7+ a coupe with SUV space.
Therefore, the P7+ looks the way it does now.
Long-time car enthusiasts surely understand that sportiness and spaciousness have always been challenging to balance in car design, with countless examples showing that pursuing a dynamic sloping design often requires compromises in space.
To achieve this balance, Xiaopeng's answer is the ONE-Box design and a dual-layer rear wing.
The ONE-Box design is easily understood, maximizing the wheelbase ratio in the design, which has become the mainstream trend in current pure electric sedan designs, significantly increasing the longitudinal space of the passenger cabin.
But what about the dual-layer rear wing?
Let's first consider what the P7+ would look like without the upper rear wing.
It's easy to see that removing the upper rear wing and following the lower rear wing to form a "roof" for the P7+ would severely compress the vertical space of the rear passengers and trunk.
Indeed, the seemingly "drawing in more details" dual-layer rear wing is actually a completely new approach by Xiaopeng to expand space.
In terms of data, the hip point to the roof height of the rear seats of the Xiaopeng P7+ reaches 973mm. By comparison, the heights of the rear seats to roof for the Xiaomi SU7 and NIO ET5 coupe models are 944mm and 940mm, respectively, compared to the 933mm of the P7, showing a significant improvement.
At the same time, the trunk volume of the P7+ has increased from the P7's 440L to 725L, expanding to 2221L when the rear seats are folded down.
What does 2221L mean? At the event, He Xiaopeng pulled out 32 20-inch suitcases from the P7i on the stage.
With such a large rear space and the standard rear seat features including massage, heating, ventilation, 10° infinitely electric adjustment, a small table, screen control, thick seat cushions, and a large center armrest... as He Xiaopeng said, the P7+ successfully allows more people to enjoy the "luxurious executive sedan" space and comfort.
Do you remember the product manager Alice of Xiaopeng saying at the event that the Xiaopeng P7+ will "lead a new trend in pure electric design and reshape the coupe space experience"?
Whether it can lead the trend is still uncertain, but at least, this is a real innovation.
Some may still say, "If it's about space, why not just make a station wagon? Don't they have to consider aerodynamic drag?"
To further make way for space, Xiaopeng customized the thinnest 800V battery pack in the industry for the P7+, with a thickness of only 108mm and a capacity of 76.3kWh. Without a large battery, lower air resistance becomes crucial.
The extended Kammback shape of the Xiaopeng P7+ provides a super-low drag coefficient of Cd0.206, resulting in a CLTC range of 710km, achieved even with the 60.7kWh version having a CLTC range of 602km.
After all this discussion, some may still say, "Space or energy consumption aside, I just think it's ugly."
If it's ugly, don't buy it, there are plenty of options in the current Chinese new energy market compared to 2020. When buying a car, there is never the best option, only what suits you.
For the target audience of the P7+, He Xiaopeng summarized it very well:
Wanting both the elegance and sportiness of the P7, yet desiring the spaciousness comparable to an SUV, to ensure comfortable seating for the family.
And this market demand is exactly what is widespread in reality.
